NHL Predictions

AI NHL Predictions

Calibrated NHL reads — moneyline, puck line, and totals — with goaltending, special teams, and shot share built in.

Sandman Edge projects every NHL game from goaltending, special teams, shot share, recent form, and betting splits, refreshed continuously against live odds. Because hockey scoring is low-frequency, the engine models totals differently than basketball — see below — and the moneyline carries the actionable conviction since the puck line is fixed.

The engine reads NHL across moneyline, puck line, and over/under totals. Over/unders use a Poisson model (convolution), which fits low-scoring sports where variance tracks the mean. When a projection doesn’t clear the sport’s confidence threshold, it returns PASS — no forced action on a fair line.

What the model weighs

Starting goalie
Confirmed starter and save-percentage form swing the projection more than any other input.
Special teams
Power play and penalty kill efficiency on both sides.
Shot share & pace
Expected shot volume and quality drive the totals projection.
Star-player form
Goals-and-assists trends for difference-makers.
Betting splits
Sharp-vs-public money and line movement.
Rest & travel
Back-to-backs and road fatigue.

Coverage

NHL is covered during the season. Picks lock at puck drop and update through the day beforehand. For the full methodology behind every projection, see how the engine works.

FAQ

Why does the model use different math for NHL totals?

Hockey scoring happens in low-frequency events where variance closely tracks the mean — classic Poisson territory — so the engine uses Poisson convolution for NHL totals instead of the Normal model it uses for basketball.

How important is the starting goalie?

Very. A confirmed starter and recent save-percentage form are among the largest inputs to an NHL projection, which is why picks can shift on a late goalie scratch.

Which markets are covered?

Moneyline, puck line, and over/under totals. The moneyline carries most of the conviction because the puck line is fixed at -1.5.
